Containers to the World FESTIVAL
Not new to the world but a world premier in Prague May 10 - June 1, 2013. How to breathe new life into a thousand-year old city, The Containers to the World Festival has been happening around the world for years. This year The Cultural Compass Institute has partnered with the Czech non-profit k svetu (To the World!) to add another great metropolis to the list. Utilizing simple shipping containers installed in multiple locations around our great city, we will offer a rich program of arts, culture and hopefully even make history ! The containers not only provide a platform but also symbolize everything we love and want to show off that's contained in our city. . . . Have a look at the super promo video made by our Containers to the World Prague team.
CONTAINERS TO THE WORLD – ABSTRACT
(May 10-June 1, 2013)
- Containers to the world is a unique project that links the periphery to the center and center with peripheries through site-specific activities, technologies of the 21st century and eco-friendly means of transport - scooter. The title itself and concept symbolizes the city, the neighborhood and all that it contains. All this is placed inside shipping containers for 3 weeks in multiple locations around the city.
- We want to support the chosen area with a range of leisure, cultural and sports activities.
- In Prague we are deploying ISO containers filled with diverse cultural activities that will support local communities.
- We want to give space for local people to actively or passively participate in the planned program in containers.
- Uniquely utilized shipping containers will become the platform and meeting place for three weeks. Their raw appearance will attract the attention of passers-by and lure them to discover their contents. The final appearance will be completed by invited artists and citizens themselves.
- We have selected sites in Prague 1,2,3, 4, 6 and 10a. We have actively negotiated with the city district authorities for permits and inclusion in the program. Our main priority was to choose places that are still slumbering or have untapped potential.
- The program will extend to more areas and will reflect the character of the place. We are working with local civic and civil society organizations and active individuals. Apart from the cultural performances we also plan mediation discussions and public debates. In addition, we have prepared workshops, Round Table Discussions and a number of fun and unusual other activities for young and old such as juggling or cooking etc. We have agreed upon the presentation of student projects on public space.
- The main topic of our project is to support local communities in the different neighborhoods. We would like to open a space for dialogue not only about urban issues but also social problem areas.
- The container will be a place of inter-generational and cross-cultural encounters. Our diverse program has something for everyone.
- We are involving local organizations, associations and area businesses in the program, which would enable them to present themselves among their neighbors and make itself visible. At the same time it will help us to better understand each other.
- World-renown documentary film maker, Roy MacGregor, will be coming to Prague for the duration of the Festival to film and document the atmosphere and activities for a new film. We are very honored to have him on board for this project.

Photo gallery of the Containers to the World Festival - Prague
First week of the Containers to the World Fest is now behind us. It's been a wild weather ride and an action-packed program. Enjoy the first part of our documentary film in the making about the Gift of Music program by The Cultural Compass Institute's featured artist: Roy MacGregor. . It's in the container at the Festival, the neighborhood and in the city of Prague . . .
Containers to the World continues . . .not wind or rain or mud or MIA cameramen could dampen the spirits of festival goers at 5 locations in Praha !
The beat goes on . . .This week we battled the weather again, slept overnight in Container #35 at Folimanka park, fielded a few complaints from neighbors, celebrated some birthdays and scrambled to replace stolen electrical equipment to keep the juice on! We are really beginning to feel like we are making a love connection in this neighborhood. We've met so many new neighbors who have showed up, shared some wonderful stories, enjoyed the theater & concert performances. Kids are having a blast and everyone's riding Scooters ! Also see a sampling of entries from the Cultural Compass Institute's Student Essay Contest about their Neighborhood . . . .
